Beautiful “Indoor Forest” Playroom Transformation Will Knock Your Socks Off
Whimsical, inventive, and ideal for playing make believe, this upgraded basement is the perfect place for a kid to be a kid (or maybe a woodland fairy?).
Colorado-based designer Liz Finkelstein overhauled this once dull space into an enchanted “indoor forest” playroom. The finished room now features real—and climbable!—Aspen trees, glowing lights, and more playful details, according to Houzz.
Before, the room was a basic basement that lacked proper storage and any sort of aesthetic appeal. The homeowners wanted a creative area—free of a television set—for their daughter, and that’s exactly what the designer delivered. “This room is just about play,” Liz told Houzz.
Originally, the homeowners wanted a built-in tree house for the room, but then the designer’s collaborator, Michael Auldrige, suggested an even better idea: a one-of-a-kind playset made from real trees. The woodworker picked up nearby fallen Aspen trees, and secured them to the floor and ceiling with bolts. “If we were going to do this, they had to be climbable,” Liz said. “There are also ledges to perch on and a ladder made out of branches so that she can play, hide and read in here.”
Liz added more fun details like the twinkle lights, forest wallpaper, and colorful furniture, but also made sure to include some components that would appeal to the adults.
To make the room useful for everyone in the family, the designer incorporated plenty of storage. “For a space to be inviting to adults, the kid clutter must be contained,” the designer told 5280 magazine. She also included cozy but modern furniture, quartz countertops, several plants, and upcycled antique mirrors and frames to house artwork. Now, it’s a dream room for both imaginative kids and nature-loving grown-ups.
